ENG vs IND 2025: Gautam Gambhir clashes with reporter over question on 'positives' from Headingley defeat

The Delhi native retaliated against the reporter, changing the way he phrased his question and revealing Following India’s crushing defeat to England in the opening Test of the series at Headingley, head coach Gautam Gambhir spoke to the media and asked reporters questions during the post-match press conference to get their thoughts on the game’s pivotal moments.

Notwithstanding the defeat, the Indian team’s specialised batsmen’s hundreds—such as opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) and captain Shubman Gill (147)—were noteworthy. KL Rahul (137) scored a century in the second innings. In the meantime, Rishabh Pant broke the record by scoring hundreds in both innings (134 and 117).

At the media-only gathering, a reporter questioned Gautam Gambhir to consider Rishabh Pant’s knocks as a good thing that happened during the Headingley clash. “We’re discussing a little positive. As the vice captain and one of the group’s leaders, how was it to watch Rishabh Pant get knocked around? How has he handled that role and responsibility?” he enquired.

The 43-year-old objected to the way the question was phrased, saying that other players’ hundreds were also crucial and fantastic for starting the series. The Delhi native responded to the journalist’s question by changing the way he phrased it and by considering the crucial individual performances that enabled them to get off to a strong start in the series.

Additionally, there are three more centuries. Those are also significant advantages. A hundred from KL [Rahul], two hundred from Rishabh, a hundred from Shubman [Gill] on his first captaincy debut, and a hundred from Yashasvi [Jaiswal] would have pleased me. To be honest, five hundred runs in a Test match is a fantastic start. The head coach shot back, “And hopefully your question could have been better.”

Bumrah also claimed five wickets: Gautam Gambhir

The head coach continued by praising star pacer Jasprit Bumrah for his outstanding performance in the opening innings, during which he took five wickets to disrupt the English batting order. But in the closing session of the last day, the Ben Stokes-led team won by five wickets, and Bumrah came out of the second innings without taking a wicket.

However, there are also a lot of advantages. In the first innings, Jasprit Bumrah also gave us five [wickets]. All of this ultimately comes down to the fact that we go out there to achieve the results if you don’t get them. Individual performances are indeed strong. Bumrah gave us a five if you’re looking for the big runs from our top six and seven that we scored in this test match. Ultimately, though, the goal of playing Test cricket is to win. Regretfully, it was not the outcome. Therefore, we accept it and go on,” he continued.
