[WATCH] ENG vs. IND 2025: India’s captain Gill leaves on day eight, and England strikes early on day four

On Day 4 of the first Test at Headingley, Brydon Carse dismissed Indian captain Shubman Gill in the morning session’s second over, giving England the start they needed. Gill was out for just a 16-ball eight after smashing a magnificent 147 in the opening innings.

With KL Rahul batting 47* at the start of Day 4, the visitors hoped to bat long the next day and post a manageable total. However, the Englishmen got the wicket they desired early in the morning session. Carse continued to tighten his lines against Gill while bowling into the right-handers at a natural angle. He hit a length ball that nibbled back in the sixth over of the innings. The Indian captain had to make the lengthy trek back into the dugout after Gill, trying to drive the ball down to third man, received an inside edge that cut into the stumps.

India hopes to have more than 300

The right-hander, who had brilliantly anchored the first innings, was unable to duplicate the performance. India’s scorecard showed 98/3 after his departure, with a 104-run lead. But, with KL Rahul still at the crease and Rishabh Pant coming in, India will need to reach a target of more than 300 to put pressure on England.

The visitors will be confident in their ability to put a respectable total on the board and rely on their bowlers to do the job, especially with Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, and Shardul Thakur yet to come. Gill’s primary weapon against the English batsmen will once again be Bumrah, who picked a fifer in the first innings, his 14th in Test cricket.

After being assigned to bat first, Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant all scored hundreds of runs to help India reach 471 in the first innings. With Harry Brook’s 99 and Ollie Pope’s 100 in response, the hosts rallied to 465, trailing by just six runs. Among India’s bowling efforts, Jasprit Bumrah’s five-wicket haul was the high point.
