As India’s Test captain, Shubman Gill had a fantastic debut. With an undefeated 127 on Day 1 of the inaugural Test match against England at Headingley, the youthful player not only led his team from the front but also made history. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 101, and the visitors finished the day with a 359/3 record. However, a little technical glitch has put Gill in peril despite his strong innings.
Why could an ICC sanction be imposed on Shubman Gill?
Gill’s hitting won hearts, but what really caught ICC’s eye was his selection of socks. The right-handed batter was seen wearing black socks during his innings, which is a clear violation of the ICC’s recently revised Clothing and Equipment Regulations. Players participating in Test matches are required to wear white, cream, or light grey socks in accordance with rule 19.45, which went into force in May 2023. Wearing any other colour could have consequences, such as a fine for the match.
consequences for the offence that the Indian skipper would face
Disciplinary action may still be taken for the violation. Gill can be fined 10–20% of his match fee and possibly given a penalty point if it is deemed a Level 1 infraction. The match referee has the last say and must determine whether the infraction was intentional or unintentional. Gill might be able to get away with merely a warning if he wore black socks because he had no other options.
On Day 1, Shubman Gill and Jaiswal put India in a dominant position.
India’s hitters took full advantage of the wicket as England skipper Ben Stokes chose to bowl first. Jaiswal became the first Indian opener to score a century at Headingley as he maintained his scorching form against the English team. There were seventeen boundaries in his 101. Before Rahul was dismissed for 42 by Brydon Carse, he and Jaiswal put together 91 runs for the opening stand. Shortly after, Stokes dismissed rookie B Sai Sudharsan for a duck. Entering at number four, Gill reached his half-century in just 56 balls, the fastest in his Test career. He then recorded his sixth Test century and his first outside of Asia before that.
