How would the Indian Test team perform under Brendon McCullum's coaching?

Since May 2022, when Brendon McCullum assumed the role of England’s Test coach, the term “Bazball” has gained widespread usage. Test cricket for England has evolved as a result of the aggressive, no-draw policy and quicker scoring in partnership with skipper Ben Stokes. The pair encouraged an aggressive, daring style of cricket that frequently placed more emphasis on winning or losing than on a draw. What would happen, though, if McCullum were to coach India and introduce this idea to a nation with customs and a completely different cricket culture?

The coaching record of Brendon McCullum

England rose from sixth place in the ICC rankings as a struggling Test team to third place under McCullum. In 53 games with England, he had a win percentage of 56.6% with 30 victories, 22 defeats, and just one draw. Following a dismal start, he guided the Kolkata Knight Riders to the 2021 IPL final, and he also won a Caribbean Premier League championship with the Trinbago Knight Riders during his coaching tenure. Whether it was his 54-ball century in his final Test match or leading New Zealand to the 2015 World Cup final, McCullum was renowned as a player for his exceedingly aggressive style.

What effect would Brendon McCullum strategy have on Indian players?

In the meantime, textbook batters have long been created in India. Technique and patience have been the cornerstones of the Indian approach to Test batting, from Sunil Gavaskar to Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Virat Kohli. These principles have been upheld by batsmen like KL Rahul, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cheteshwar Pujara. The younger generation, which is better suited for Bazball, is hinted at by up-and-coming players like Rishabh Pant, Sarfaraz Khan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Nitish Kumar Reddy. But the Bazball strategy needs to be slightly modified.

Notably, Bazball had little success during England’s early 2024 visit of India. They lost the five-match Test series 4-1, after getting off to a great start. On turning wickets, their aggressive batting approach was ineffective against India’s spin-heavy attack. After the series, McCullum acknowledged that England needed to improve their strategy.

What is the most important task for Brendon McCullum?

Balla means bat in Hindi, therefore if Brendon McCullum were to take over India, he would have to change the name from Bazball to BazBalla. Modifications that honour and accommodate Indian conditions and player strengths would be necessary. Situational awareness, shot selection, and knowledge of spin-friendly pitches would need to be emphasised in the concept. His approach of supporting athletes and promoting independence might undoubtedly make India even more courageous.

In terms of bowling, the former captain of New Zealand would also need to devote a significant amount of time and energy to Indian spinners. Nonetheless, Brendon McCullum presence will be appreciated by the pacers, who may be inspired to take a hard swing at the opposing hitters. It’s interesting that he has a poor tutoring record in India. In 13 games as England’s coach in India, the team had two victories and eleven defeats (15.38% win record). In his 21 games as head coach of KKR in India, he won eight and lost thirteen (38.1%).
