Hayley Matthews will skip WBBL in order to have surgery on her shoulder

On Friday, 30 May, at the County Ground in Derby, Hayley Matthews suffered a shoulder injury while fielding in the opening ODI against England. The two ODIs that followed were missed by the West Indies captain. She did, however, play all three games in the ODI series against South Africa, which came to an end on Tuesday, June 17.

The 27-year-old will not be eligible to play in the eight-team competition, therefore the Melbourne Renegades will need to find a substitute in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). The defending champions, Renegades, had signed Matthews as a pre-draft recruit for two years, but just hours before the draft, it was revealed that she would not be available.

Beginning on Friday, June 20, Hayley Matthews will play in the West Indies’ three-match Twenty20 International series against South Africa. In September, she will also represent the Barbados Royals in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League. Since the West Indies did not make it to the world tournament, the all-rounder will then have surgery during the Women’s ODI World Cup. After then, she won’t be available for the remainder of the year.

“It is obvious that we are sad that Hayley will not be joining us this season. She has contributed much to the Renegades during her tenure, not just with her performances but also with her professionalism and leadership. The Renegades and Hayley Matthews have a very close relationship, and we are confident that it will last for the upcoming year and beyond. ESPNcricinfo cited Renegades general manager James Rosengarten as stating, “Hayley Matthews loves this club and we share in her disappointment at not being available for this year’s tournament.”

Now, on Thursday, June 19, in Melbourne, Renegades will have to fill all three foreign places at the WBBL draft. Last season in the WBBL, Hayley Matthews was instrumental in helping the Renegades win the coveted championship for the first time. In the previous edition, they placed last in the standings, but their narrative of salvation will live on for generations.

Despite yielding fewer than seven runs per over, Hayley Matthews was their top run scorer with 324 runs and a strike rate of 130.64.

He was also their second-highest wicket-taker with 14 scalps. The Barbados player has amassed 3074 and 2828 runs from 99 One-Day Internationals and 109 Twenty20 Internationals, respectively, in international cricket. In the two formats, she has taken 125 and 11 wickets, respectively.
