Prior to India’s five-match Test series against England, which starts on June 20 at Leeds, former Indian captain Kapil Dev acknowledged that it feels odd to see the Pataudi Trophy renamed the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
The Pataudi Trophy, given to the victor of the Test series between England and India in England, was recently renamed the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
It has been a long time since such a transformation, said Kapil Dev.
It seems a bit odd—like, does this also occur? But don’t worry, everything in cricket works. There isn’t any difference in the end. Cricket is cricket. At an event in New Delhi, Kapil Dev was cited by News18 as stating, “The cricket on the pitch should be the same.”
Due to the Air India jet accident in Ahmedabad, the official announcement was postponed from its original date on the sidelines of the World Test Championship final at Lord’s. According to rumours, the winner of the forthcoming series would get a medal bearing the Pataudi family’s name, which has a long history in cricket in both India and England.
Former Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar criticised the trophy’s renaming, calling it unsettling. Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, the previous captain of India, was honoured with the trophy’s original name. It was established eighteen years ago and has great historical significance, demonstrating the close connections the Pataudi family has with the cricketing scene in India and England.
Both his son Mansur and India’s captain, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, played county cricket in England. The winning captain will still receive a unique medal bearing the Pataudi name even though the series name has changed.
When this occurred, Sachin contacted the ECB to express his belief that the Pataudi name ought to continue to be associated with the India-England rivalry. According to a BCCI source, Mr. Jay Shah participated in the conversations.
