Joe Root discussed Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s retirements from the game’s longest format before of the opening Test match of the England vs. India series at Headingley, Leeds. The top batsman asserted that he never felt like he could compete with any of the Fab 4 players, especially Kohli. According to Root, he has always respected Kohli as a batter.
The quartet of Root, Kohli, Steve Smith, and Kane Williamson is known as the “Fab 4,” a nickname that was first popularised by Martin Crowe of New Zealand. The 36-year-old and the English great had battles on the pitch, something the English great believed he will miss. But he believed that the greats’ retirement would give the up-and-coming talents a chance to establish themselves.
“Virat and I have never been in competition. I’ve always loved him and thought, ‘Wow, what a player.’ In an interview with Sony Sports Network, Root stated, “I’ll miss those on-field battles, but it gives other players a chance to try and make their mark on Test Cricket.”
For a very long time, they have accomplished incredible things for Indian cricket: Joe Root
The English batsman believed that without Rohit and Kohli, cricket would be a worse game. The right-handed batsman said that the two have done incredible things for a long time and considered them to be legendary. Despite their absence, Root anticipated that the forthcoming Test series will be challenging.
Without them, cricket is a worse sport. They are legends from India. For a very long time, they have done incredible things for Indian cricket. We still anticipate it to be fiercely competitive, even though it will have a little different appearance than the series,” Root continued.
For the first time in a long time, neither Rohit nor Kohli will be available for the visiting team for the 2025 India-England series. Similarly, Rohit was India’s top run scorer during their most recent Test series visit of England. But in the past few years, neither was performing at their peak.
