Shakib Al Hasan, a member of parliament and former captain of Bangladesh cricket, was among 14 people who were banned from travel by the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court on June 16. After the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a petition, Senior Special Judge Md. Zakir Hossain Galib issued the ruling.
As part of an ongoing investigation into claims of widespread misappropriation involving hundreds of crores of Bangladeshi taka from the nation’s share market through different forms of corruption, the travel ban was requested.
The other defendants include Shirin Akhter, Javed A. Matin, Zahed Kamal, Humayun Kabir, Tanvir Nizam, Mohammad Bashar, Abul Kalam Matbar, Kanoka Afroz, Deputy Registrar of the Department of Cooperatives Abul Khair, his wife Kazi Sadia Hassan, and Abul Kalam Matbar.
“The commission received confidential intelligence suggesting the accused individuals might attempt to flee the country to evade investigation,” said Aktarul Islam, Deputy Director (Public Relations) at ACC headquarters. According to BSS News, the ACC consequently sought the court to impose the travel limitations.
With more than 14,000 runs and 700 wickets in international cricket, Shakib Al Hasan is regarded as one of Bangladesh’s cricketing greats.
He is still the only bowler from Bangladesh with more than 300 ODI wickets and was the first to reach the double of 2,000 runs and 100 wickets in ODIs.
A two-match Test series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin in Galle on June 17. The 2025–27 cycle of the ICC World Test Championship begins with the first Test. They will try to get off to a good start in the upcoming campaign after finishing seventh in the previous WTC cycle (2023–25) with four victories from 12 games.
