I believe heading to the West Indies, Australia must recall Sam Konstas: Mark Taylor

"David Warner retired nearly two years ago now and we haven't really found a replacement for him," Mark Taylor said.

I believe heading to the West Indies, Australia must recall Sam Konstas: Mark Taylor

Sam Konstas should begin the batting for the upcoming West Indies tour, Mark Taylor recommended the Australian team’s management. The 19-year-old had to watch Australia lose to South Africa in the World Test Championship (WTC) final this week, despite having shown a lot of promise in his first Test series against India. Cameron Green batted at No. 3 and Marnus Labuschagne opened for the Baggy Greens.

Taylor believed that David Warner, who retired from Test cricket in January 2024, had not been replaced by Australia.

It appears that Sam Konstas will make a comeback after Steve Smith dislocated his little finger during the WTC final.

“We haven’t really identified a substitute for David Warner, who resigned about two years ago. To be completely honest with you, though, they haven’t really made an effort either. After making his debut at Melbourne with that daring 60, Travis Head moved up the order (in Sri Lanka), whereas Sam Konstas was left out,” Taylor stated on Sunday’s episode of Nine’s Wide World of Sports.

“We need to get Sam Konstas back in for the trip to the West Indies, and I believe he will play in a more conventional manner. He ought to be given a chance, and the selectors’ job is somewhat made simpler by Steve Smith’s decision not to participate in that series,” he continued.

Labuschagne scored 17 and 22 in the WTC final, failing to leave an impression. On his international comeback after back surgery, however, Green failed to reach double figures in either innings.

Later this month, Australia will travel to the West Indies.

Australia will play the West Indies in three Test matches and five Twenty20 Internationals in the Caribbean. The Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, will host the first Test match from June 25 to June 29. Since they drew a two-match series in Pakistan with Shan Masood’s team 1-1 in January, the West Indies have not participated in a Test match.
