‘He showed no ego’ – Sunil Gavaskar applauds Rajat Patidar’s captaincy after RCB’s first-ever IPL title triumph

"He had no pride in himself. He was going to talk about what needed to be done with the senior guys. "His lack of ego was clear from the way he was asking," Gavaskar remarked.

'He showed no ego' – Sunil Gavaskar applauds Rajat Patidar's captaincy after RCB's first-ever IPL title triumph

After RCB defeated Punjab Kings by six runs in the IPL 2025 final on June 3 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Sunil Gavaskar hailed Rajat Patidar and said his captaincy was outstanding.

The former Indian cricket player was amazed by Patidar’s capacity for leadership. When leading a team that has multiple superstars, a captain may easily harbour concerns, according to Gavaskar. He praised Patidar for being unique in this respect, though, since he secured the team’s senior members’ backing and made sure everyone was working towards the same goal.

“His leadership has been outstanding. When your squad is full of superstar players, you occasionally wonder if you will be able to handle them all. But you can see that he has leadership skills from the way he has built this club and gained the backing of the stars,” Gavaskar stated on Star Sports.

He was approaching the more experienced players and talking to them about: Sunil Gavaskar

The former Indian captain went on to say that Rajat Patidar met every player and asked for their opinions because he had no ego. Gavaskar went on to say that by talking with the team’s older players about important matters, the star player accomplished what was required for the team.

“He had no pride in himself. He was going to talk about what needed to be done with the senior guys. He was clearly lacking in ego based on the manner in which he was asking. An ego should never be present in a captain. He must be acting in the team’s best interests, and he did just that,” the former India opener continued.

The first RCB captain to win the IPL championship was Patidar. Anil Kumble, Daniel Vettori, and Virat Kohli were all well-known at the top level and were the previous captains who made sure RCB made it to the final.
