Regarding reports that he will be taking over as president of the BCCI, Rajeev Shukla said, "These are pointless talks."

Reports that Rajeev Shukla will take Roger Binny’s place as the new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have gone viral, putting the organisation in the news once more. The vice-president of the BCCI has hinted at the prospect of assuming the position.

Roger Binny will step down as president on July 19, the day he turns 70. Shukla, the board’s vice-president, will fill in as interim president for the following three months. Shukla immediately dismissed the discussions about him taking over as president, claiming that it is a procedural matter and that the next in line will temporarily fill the vacancy. However, the reports also suggest that Shukla may run for president in the upcoming election.

“These discussions are pointless. The next in line is given the temporary responsibility prior to the election when a position is about to become vacant. OP India cited Shukla as stating, “It is a procedural thing.”

The fruitful reign of Roger Binny as president of the BCCI

On October 18, 2022, Roger Binny succeeded Sourav Ganguly as President of the BCCI. With the Indian men’s team ranked fourth in Test matches and first in both white-ball forms, Binny has had a good tenure. In both the 50-over and 20-over formats, the Indian women’s team is placed third.

Under Binny’s leadership, the Men in Blue have won two ICC competitions: the Champions Trophy in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in 2024. In order to encourage female cricket players through a lucrative franchise competition, he also established the Women’s Premier competition (WPL). The Mumbai Indians Women have won two titles, making them the most successful team in the WPL’s three seasons to date. In 2024, Smriti Mandhana’s RCB also took home the trophy.
