Joe Root outlines his clear strategy for ODIs: "I want to play as much as I can for England"

Joe Root wanted to play for his country as many innings as he could. According to the right-hander, he still has a lot of cricket left in him. The middle-order batsman affirmed that he still wants to improve daily, contribute to the team, and stay in the game to assist his team win games and series in various forms.

Following his undefeated 166*(139) in the second ODI of the series against the West Indies in Cardiff, which gave England an insurmountable 2-0 lead on Sunday, June 1, England batter Joe Root spoke after earning Player of the Match. During the innings, the star hitter reached 7000 ODI runs. In response to the same question, the veteran said it was an indication of ageing.

“After playing as many games as that, scoring 7,000 runs in ODIs is a sign that you are becoming old. For as long as I can, I want to do my best for England. In the post-match interview, Root stated, “Hopefully, an innings like that demonstrates that I still have a lot to give and a lot more runs in there.”

“It will be time to stop when the drive to improve daily, to join the group, and to avoid being left behind at the end of a chase like that ceases to be a burning desire. The star batter continued, “I will continue to try to do my part in helping us win games and series down the line because it does not feel like that is anywhere near the case right now.”

I nearly felt bad for not being able to attend Jos: Joe Root

He was then questioned on Jos Buttler’s decision to resign as England’s limited overs captain after the country’s terrible ODI results in the 2023 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy, as well as his failure to defend the 2024 T20 World Cup.

The legendary hitter reflected on the length of time he had spent playing with Buttler and felt bad for abandoning him during his difficult captaincy. Root acknowledged that there is more space for playing ODIs, expressed a desire to play as many of them as possible, and expressed the goal of improving England’s present squad.

“Jos and I have played a great deal of cricket together, and I nearly felt bad for not being there for him during much of his stay. I want to participate in ODI cricket now that there are more possibilities and opportunities to do so. I want to play for England as much as possible. Without a doubt, if I can improve the team,” Joe Root continued.
