Jofra Archer sidelined from West Indies ODIs due to thumb injury

Jofra Archer‘s injury to his right thumb has forced him to miss the three-match ODI series against the West Indies, which is a sad situation for the English cricket squad. On Wednesday, May 21, the England and Wales Cricket Board verified the development on their official website.

Over the course of the following two weeks, Jofra Archer will undergo another evaluation by the team’s medical staff to determine when he could resume playing cricket. Three ODIs (May 29–June 3) will open the white-ball series against the West Indies, followed by an equal number of T20Is (June 6–June 10).

The English ODI team for the three-match 50-over series now includes Luke Wood. Up to this point, the left-arm bowler has represented England in two ODIs and five T20Is. Wood has failed to claim a wicket in the ODI format despite having previously been selected to replace Archer in the T20I team for the West Indies series.

At the Eden Gardens on May 4, Archer initially suffered the injury while fielding during the Rajasthan Royals’ one-run defeat to the Kolkata Knight Riders. At first, it seemed like a small setback. Nevertheless, additional evaluations showed ligament injury.

Jofra Archer failure to return to India for the IPL after the competition began after the nine-day break may possibly be to blame for this.

For a considerable amount of time, Archer has been dealing with a series of chronic injuries. This includes a stress fracture to his back and an elbow issue that has necessitated several surgeries. In May of last year, he returned to international competition in time for the T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies. Archer participated in the Champions Trophy earlier in 2025 before the IPL.
