Given the escalating tension between India and Pakistan, the 18th Indian Premier League (IPL) was halted for a week on Friday, May 9. This decision followed the midway stoppage of Thursday’s Punjab Kings vs. Delhi Capitals match owing to a major technical issue.
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal stated that the tournament’s continuation made little logic. Additionally, he disclosed that a complete suspension for the rest of the season was under consideration.
Arun Dhumal told CNN-News18, “You see, given the situation as of right now, we thought it appropriate that it does not make sense to have the tournament going on for a while, and therefore will take a call as the situation unfolds in the coming days.”
After consulting with all parties involved, he continued, “we were considering (full suspension) and it was thought appropriate to suspend for a week, assess the situation, and then take a final call.”
According to Dhumal, the situation will be watched over the next few days, and after consulting with all parties involved, a final decision regarding the league’s return will be made.
As you are aware, the nation is currently focused on winning this war, and we wish to demonstrate our support for both our government and our armed troops. Thus, it is our current emphasis; we are not yet taking into account anything else. Therefore, after consulting with all parties involved, we will assess the issue and make a decision as necessary,” he continued.
There are just 16 IPL 2025 games remaining after the match between the Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings was called off. Twelve league games, Qualifiers 1 and 2, the Eliminator, and the Final are all included in this. While Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Chennai Super Kings have already been eliminated, Gujarat Titans are now leading the points table. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Lucknow Super Giants were scheduled to face off on Friday. But for the time being, the game has been postponed.
