Following the match between KKR and RR at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, 14-year-old Suryavanshi met with former India captain Sourav Ganguly. Following a close loss to KKR, the Indian veteran urged the young player to keep playing with his unafraid brand of cricket.
Against the Gujarat Titans (GT), the RR opener hit the second-fastest century in IPL history. He has now been dismissed twice for single-figure scores, once against KKR and once against the Mumbai Indians (MI). KKR, the reigning champions, dismissed Suryavanshi for four runs.
The young batter was instructed by former KKR captain Sourav Ganguly to stick with his current style of play and not alter it.
“I’ve watched your game. Play cricket the way you play without fear. You don’t have to alter your strategy. His power is good. India Today cited Sourav Ganguly as saying, “He is a very good player, even though he did not score runs in the KKR match.”
Following his debut against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), the adolescent broke multiple records and became the youngest player in IPL history.
The left-handed hitter trained under former Ranji cricketer Manish Ojha after enrolling in a Samastipur cricket academy. At the age of 12, he made his Bihar Ranji Trophy debut. In 2024, he crushed a century in a junior Test match against Australia. The left-hander brought INR 1.1 crore at the IPL mega auction.
Thus far, Suryavanshi has demonstrated a lot of promise with a backlift that is reminiscent of Yuvraj Singh and Sourav Ganguly. But with so much attention on him, Rahul Dravid, the head coach of RR, has warned fans and the media to exercise caution.
On May 12, RR will play the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium.
