After using a gauge to measure his bat, Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni received permission from the on-field umpires to bat in the 52nd IPL 2025 match between CSK and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Dhoni’s bat failed the test after the umpire first measured it. The star hitter then decided to pass his willow’s test on his own initiative. The umpire was persuaded by the CSK captain’s successful, albeit less clean, bat pass through the gauge.
Lungi Ngidi was on fire in the 17th over of CSK’s innings, dismissing Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis off consecutive deliveries to put RCB back in the game. Dhoni moved into the middle at that point and was put through the bat test.
According to the regulations, a cricket bat must measure 2.68 inches in total depth, 4.33 inches in breadth, and 1.61 inches across the edges. According to the gauge, a legal bat’s curve must be within 0.20 inches. Throughout the current season, batters like Hardik Pandya and Nitish Rana have been put to the test.

MS Dhoni accepts responsibility for Chennai Super Kings IPL 2025 defeat to RCB.
CSK needed 42 runs in 21 balls when Dhoni took the pitch. The CSK captain only scored 12 runs in eight balls during his time in the middle.
With his performance, the star batter was not happy. The 43-year-old acknowledged in the post-game conversation that he ought to have made a few more shots to relieve the pressure. In the process, Dhoni praised Romario Shepherd’s knock and accepted responsibility for CSK’s defeat.
“I thought I should have converted a few more shots to relieve some of the pressure when I batted because of the deliveries and the runs required. I accept responsibility. Romario Shepherd was outstanding, but we pulled it back in between their strong start. He was able to score as many runs as possible no matter what the bowlers bowled,” Dhoni added.
