Adam Gilchrist criticises Cricket Australia's handling of Ashton Agar

The Border Gavaskar Trophy was retained by Team India when they won the second Test of the series. Following a promising start, the Australians were unable to capitalise as their batting imploded in the second innings due to Ravindra Jadeja and Ravindra Ashwin‘s outstanding efforts.

With their dismal performance, cricket experts from around the world have harshly criticised Australia. Former Australian star stumper-batsman Adam Gilchrist was also among the experts who commented on the selection of the squad and Ashton Agar’s omission.

Adam Gilchrist viewed the team’s treatment of Agar as an insult; thus, Agar, age 29, was omitted from the squad for the first two Tests and Todd Murphy was given his debut.

“There have been rumours that he [Agar] would be on a flight home because he might feel like he’s surplus to needs out there,” Adam Gilchrist told SEN Radio. “I can understand why, without being in the camp and knowing the specific reasons why he wasn’t selected.”

“But it’s a very huge insult that I know from travelling and being on many tours, you felt that if you’re picked on the tour in a larger squad – unless it’s a pretty extreme like for like that has to come in – you normally anticipated the first reserves to stand up,” he continued.

Adam Gilchrist is also of the opinion that Renshaw may be dropped in subsequent matches.

As a result of their poor performance in the first two matches, Australia will attempt to improve, which could result in lineup changes. Adam Gilchrist speculated that Matthew Renshaw could be cut from the team for the future matches.

“Maybe they keep the three spinners if conditions justify it, and then Green comes in and offers that lovely balance,” Adam Gilchrist said. “It looks like Renshaw would be the one to leave if that were to occur, as he appears a bit confused as to where he fits into the picture.”
