India won the Women's Tri-Series opener against Sri Lanka, however they were penalised for their slow over-rate.

In their inaugural encounter of the Women’s Tri-series versus Sri Lanka in Colombo, India Women maintained a sluggish over-rate, for which they were fined 5% of their match money. Following the game’s completion on Tuesday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) declared the sanction.

Even after accounting for time allowances, India was still one goal shy of the goal, which led to the imposition of the penalties. The sentence was accepted by Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur, negating the need for a formal hearing.

The ICC release said, “Players are fined five percent of their match fee for each over if their side fails to bowl within the allotted time, in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences.”

On-field referees Anna Harris and Nimali Perera made the accusation, and the ruling was upheld by third umpire Lyndon Hannibal and fourth umpire Dedunu de Silva.

India played the game with a dominant performance. They won the toss and chose to field first. Sri Lanka was dismissed for just 147 runs in 38.1 overs by the Indian bowlers, who hit at regular intervals. With statistics of 3/31 in eight overs at an economy rate of 3.9, Sneh Rana spearheaded the bowling attack. Nallapureddy Charani and Deepti Sharma each took two wickets. With 30 runs, opener Hasini Perera led Sri Lanka in scoring.

Following a slight over-rate penalty in the tri-series opener, India dominates.

Rain caused the match to be cut short to 39 overs in the second innings. India won by nine wickets after easily chasing down the goal in 29.4 overs. Smriti Mandhana (43 off 46) and Harleen Deol (48 off 71) provided support for Pratika Rawal, who led the batting with an undefeated 50 off 62 balls. India’s tri-series debut was made possible with the victory.
