The IPL 2025 hosts, the Mumbai Indians (MI), defeated the Lucknow Super Giants by 54 runs to win their fifth straight game. After scoring 215 points overall, the home team got off to a great start and immediately put pressure on the LSG team.
While chasing the enormous score, the Lucknow team may have had their moments, but ultimately the MI bowlers controlled the pivotal moments and dismissed the LSG team for 161. LSG is under a lot of pressure moving forward because this is their fifth tournament loss.
Talking Points
1. The batting display of Rickelton and Suryakumar
Ryan Rickelton (58 off 32 deliveries) and Suryakumar Yadav (54 off 28 deliveries) were the Mumbai team’s top hitters of the day. The Boys in Blue needed them to fire that day, and their half-centuries set the stage for a massive score.
2. Bosch and Dhir add the finishing touch
The last cameos from Corbin Bosch and Naman Dhir were crucial in helping MI reach the high total of 215 even if Surya and Rickelton’s knocks were significant. Bosch scored 20 off 11 on his IPL debut, and Naman struck 25 off 11 deliveries. At 200+, the two were impressive.
3. The clinical bowling of MI bowlers
It was the bowlers’ responsibility to defend the total once the hitters had completed their task. With outstanding spells from MI’s renowned pacer Jasprit Bumrah (4/22 in four overs), Trent Boult (3/20), and all-rounder Will Jacks (2/18 in two overs), who was named Player of the Match, the MI bowlers were able to limit the LSG hitters. In summary, the Mumbai team put up an outstanding display with the ball.
Who Said What?
Rishabh Pant, LSG (Losing Captain)
[Bowling first] It was the right decision for us, we back our batting. We want to give the bowlers the best conditions, but today was not our day. The other team is also playing good cricket, and you have to give them credit instead of questioning ourselves. But we can figure it out because we have a break. [Batting at No. 4] I am not thinking about it too much. In a season like this you can start questioning yourself and I don’t want to do that. Every time you take out that induvial is not the right thing to do. [On Mayank] It was good to see him coming back. He is getting into his rhythm. Hopeful he becomes better and better.
Hardik Pandya, MI (Winning Captain)
The momentum which we had and carrying that momentum and everyone has been chipping. Everyone kept taking the chances. At the end it looked like we have lost of a few wickets. But Bosch and Naman came in and chipped in. We knew when to kill the game and we were awesome. The good teams are made of that when everyone comes in and chips in. [Bowling one over] Whenever it is required I bowl. Today I thought it was a great chance for Bosch to come in and bowl. [Five in a row] This competition is very tough and we can’t afford to get carried away. We will always look forward to play good cricket and always look at the next game.
Will Jacks, Player of the match
I am a batter who bowls but my bowling is very important. [Part-time bowler?] I work very hard on my bowling. I know I am not a part-timer; I don’t care what everyone else says. [Two wickets in an over] We know how important Pooran and Pant are. Offspinners to left-handers are important and glad we got the two wickets. [Revival] I have really enjoyed my time here. They have been very welcoming. Everyone has given me utmost confidence to be part of the team. We have to continue the good work. [On Bumrah] He is an extremely good bowler. I have had the displeasure to face him in the nets and it not a good feeling. I am very happy to be on the same team as him.
