Sam Billings is presently playing for the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). In last year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) mega-auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, he was not sold.
The IPL 2025 and the PSL’s tenth season are taking place concurrently. India and Pakistan have always been bitter rivals in sports, and their animosity is a result of the sociopolitical unrest that exists between their two neighbours. The best players in world cricket play in the IPL, which is widely recognised as the most popular T20 league in the world. However, this is not the case for other competitions of a similar nature in other nations.
During a recent news conference, a Pakistani reporter asked Sam Billings to compare the two leagues.
The IPL is the most financially successful franchise T20 league. The numbers of spectators are astounding, and they continue to rise annually. Nonetheless, PSL and IPL comparisons are common among Pakistani fans. The England batsman-wicketkeeper made fun of the reporter by asking whether he wanted him to say something goofy. According to Billings, the IPL is the greatest T20 league in the world, and other leagues are making a concerted effort to catch up.
“You want me to make a dumb comment? It’s difficult to ignore the IPL as the world’s top competition; it’s so clear that all other competitions are lagging behind. In England, we’re attempting to emulate this, with the PSL ranking as the second-best league in the world and the Big Bash following behind,” Sam Billings said the reporter.
David Warner addresses Indian fans’ animosity regarding his PSL tenure.
Remarkably, this is not the first time a Pakistani reporter has attempted to incite controversy by bringing up India in a query directed at a cricket player. David Warner, the captain of the Karachi Kings, was recently questioned about his opinions after he chose to play in the PSL and was met with animosity by Indian supporters. The former Australian opener dismissed the inquiry, stating that he was unaware of any such response from Indian cricket fans.
“I’ve never heard of it before. In my opinion, I would want to play cricket. There is a chance to visit PSL. The scheduling of my foreign calendar prevented me from attending PSL. According to the Hindustan Times, Warner stated, “I want to compete now, captain the Karachi Kings, and hopefully we can win the trophy.”
