The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) agreed to rename the Divecha Pavilion Level 3 the Rohit Sharma Stand at their Annual General Meeting (AGM). In recognition of their services to Indian cricket, stands will also be erected in honour of former Indian captain Ajit Wadekar and former MCA President Sharad Pawar.
The Sharad Pawar Stand and the Ajit Wadekar Stand will be the new names for the Grand Stand Level 3 and Level 4, respectively. Additionally, the match-day office at the MCA Pavilion will be named in commemoration of former Mumbai Cricket Association President Amol Kale.
“A key resolution passed during the AGM was the approval of the naming of stands at Wankhede Stadium, a proposal initially put forward by Mr Milind Narvekar and seconded by Mr Jitendra Awhad,” according to the Mumbai Cricket Association press release.
“The MCA remains committed to preserving the legacy of stalwarts who have made invaluable contributions to the sport while continuing its mission of cricketing excellence,” the organisation stated in a statement.
MCA has a great deal of regard for Mumbai Cricket’s foundations.
The MCA President, Ajinkya Naik, discussed the pavilion and stands’ new names. He explained that it was MCA’s way of honouring the foundations of Mumbai cricket in order to forge a bright future. These stands and lounges, according to Naik, will honour the memory of people who put in a lot of effort to create the world-class stadium that it is now.
“Today’s actions demonstrate our commitment to forging an even more robust future and our profound respect for the foundations of Mumbai cricket. Brick by brick, run after run, the heritage of those who created Mumbai’s cricketing culture will always be echoed by these stands and this lounge,” Naik stated.
A significant debate was held over raising the corpus for affiliated clubs to INR 75 crores, with a potential increase to INR 100 crores in the upcoming years, in addition to renaming the stands. Strengthening infrastructure at the grassroots level and guaranteeing the sport’s sustained expansion in the area are the main goals.
