First-class retirement announced by a former IPL champion

Henriques has represented four Indian Premier League (IPL) teams: the Delhi Capitals (2010), the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2013), the Sunrisers Hyderabad (2014–2017), the Punjab Kings (2021), and the Kolkata Knight Riders (2009).

Moises Henriques has made the decision to retire from elite competition. The captain of New South Wales (NSW) is still eligible to be selected for white-ball cricket but will no longer play in red-ball cricket. In Henriques’ place, Jack Edwards has assumed leadership of the team.

In 2016, SRH defeated RCB in the final to win his first and only championship. In the IPL, he has amassed 1,000 runs overall and taken 42 wickets in 62 games.

Returning to his red-ball career, Henriques hasn’t played for NSW since November, and they didn’t make it to the final, finishing fourth in the Sheffield Shield 2024–25 season.

“Being able to lead and play for this state for so long was an honour, but playing for NSW means leading not only through words and preparation but also through performances,” Henriques said. “I pretty much made my mind up before Christmas this year that it was time for me to stop playing Sheffield Shield cricket,” he said.

“Even at this advanced age, my body was still capable, but I simply wasn’t leading by winning cricket matches for my state in the lengthier format of the game, which is something I think is necessary at this age.

“I shall keep a close eye on the talented set of younger players who will take over and advance our wonderful state. I want to express my gratitude to them for giving me a place where I enjoy going to work.

In four Test matches for Australia, Henriques has amassed 6,830 runs at 34.84 with the bat and taken 127 wickets at 30.75 with the ball.

“I leave the team in great hands with Jack Edwards, who took over and has showed such strong leadership already so early in his career,” Henriques stated.

“I would like to thank Cricket NSW for their continued assistance. Since I joined this organisation at the age of 17, they have supported me at every turn. I aim to continue giving my all in the shorter forms after twenty-one years, and I will keep doing my best to give back to this game that has given me so much.”

Henriques’ contract with the Sydney Sixers is still in effect for one season. With the Sixes, he has won three championships, including two in 2020 and 2021 while serving as captain.
