Shubman Gill, captain of the Gujarat Titans, emphasized the significance of “maximising the powerplay” in the 2025 Indian Premier League. With Gill and his opening partner Sai Sudharsan’s strike rates of 131.08 and 115.49 in the first six overs, the squad recorded the lowest run rate of 7.72 in powerplays the previous season. The club finished seventh in Shubman Gill debut season as captain.
Shubman Gill acknowledged that the team’s performance in 2024’s powerplays had been lacking. He accepted responsibility for his inability to play the way he desired, which had an effect on the squad.
“The goal is to take as few wickets as possible while scoring as many runs as you can. Last season, we performed poorly both during and after the powerplay. At GT’s press conference on Wednesday, March 19, Gill stated, “We couldn’t play the way we wanted to in the powerplay and even after that, and that shows in the fact that we couldn’t qualify.”
“It is my duty as a batter to bat in a way that maximizes the powerplay for us. That’s my goal, and maybe we’ll fix the mistakes from the previous season,” he continued.

Shubman Gill does not want his squad to aim too high and maybe fail horrifically and needlessly, even though he wants to increase his team’s powerplay scores this season. The 25-year-old wants his batters to evaluate the situation beforehand and adjust their game accordingly.
“As a squad, I don’t believe we’re aiming to reach 300. That isn’t our objective. We want to play that type of cricket, and we will evaluate the current circumstances. We’re not saying no to 240, 250, or 260 runs if the pitch or circumstances permit it, but there may be instances in which 150 or 160 runs would be the best total on a wicket.
“Hence, if I feel as a team if you are only looking to play one way, then you’re not adapting, and the hallmark of a great team is that it adapts the best to the suitable conditions and the challenges that are thrown at them,” the captain of GT stated.
