With the 18th Indian Premier League (IPL) in just three days, legendary player MS Dhoni of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is already looking ready for the season. The 43-year-old recently showed off his signature helicopter shot during a drill. Dhoni made his famous hit, which sent the ball into the stands, against young Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana.
Even though he announced his retirement from international cricket in August 2020, Dhoni is still a vital part of CSK and plays in the lucrative league. Both fans and pundits are anticipating his comeback as he was retained for INR 4 crore prior to the 2025 Indian Premier League. He averaged 53.66 last season and smashed 161 runs at a strike rate of 220.54.
Dhoni faced Pathirana, who is renowned for his yorkers and slingy movement, during CSK’s practice session. However, Dhoni’s trademark helicopter shot effectively attacked one such attempted yorker, sending the ball soaring straight down the ground.

IPL 2025, meanwhile, might be Dhoni’s last season. Rumors about his retirement began when fans saw him sporting a T-shirt that read, “One last time,” in Morse code. Dhoni and the CSK management haven’t commented on it, though.
On March 23, CSK will play the Mumbai Indians in the opening match of their IPL 2025 season at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Five players, including Dhoni, Pathirana, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, and Shivam Dube, were kept by the five-time champions prior to the season.
