In an attempt to make a comeback this season, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) will enter the league with a fresh team that includes several superstars. Ricky Ponting, the current head coach of PBKS, discusses the team’s shortcomings from the previous campaign and their plans to strengthen it moving forward in the competition.
Despite winning just five of their 14 games, the PBKS team finished tenth in the previous season. In addition to having a new core, the squad has a new captain in Shreyas Iyer, who the franchise purchased for 26.75 crores. Coach Ponting stated that the team’s poor home record is one of the reasons they haven’t been able to win a trophy in the event. He also mentioned that practice games and training camps will be held at the venue to ensure the players are fully aware of the conditions. Additionally, he disclosed how this can aid in selecting the ideal playing XI.
At a news conference, Ponting stated, “We lost games at home last year. The team wants to better understand their home conditions with training camps and practice games, focusing on creating new memories and winning games at home.”
“With our excellent players, selecting the starting eleven won’t be simple. To aid in our decision-making, we have two practice games. The former Australian cricket player continued, “We want competition for spots, ensuring everyone works hard.”
When I was appointed, I sought a significant change: Ricky Ponting
Ponting also expressed confidence in the lineup he selected for this season, which includes Iyer as well as top India leg spinners Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal. Ponting has explained the rationale behind selecting these three players in a squad, despite the fact that they were among the most costly players from the auction.
“When I was hired as head coach, I desired a significant transformation. In order to develop the squad from the ground up, we concentrated our auction strategy on acquiring important players like Yuzi Chahal, Arshdeep, and Shreyas Iyer,” Ponting replied.
