In international cricket, Varun Chakravarthy is playing at his best, taking wickets for enjoyment for India. His recent contribution to India’s successful Champions Trophy 2025 campaign was crucial. Varun Chakravarthy career hasn’t always been sunny, either.
In July 2021, he played his first Twenty20 International match for India against Sri Lanka. He later participated in the 2021 T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. But in the three games, he did not take a single wicket, and India was unable to advance past the first round.
Varun Chakravarthy remembered the difficult moments after the poor performance. He disclosed that following the World Cup, he was threatened and advised not to return to India. The mystery spinner further said that while returning home from the airport, he was being followed by cyclists.
“I was going through a dark period. My sadness stemmed from my belief that I couldn’t live up to the fanfare around my World Cup selection. I felt bad that I didn’t take a single wicket. I was not chosen for three years after that. Therefore, I believe that the road to my debut was easier than the return to the squad. A lot of things about me had to change (after 2021). During a YouTube show, Chakravarthy informed well-known presenter Gobinath, “I had to change my daily routine, practice.”
In the past, I would treble the number of balls I practiced—50 in a session. It was challenging because I didn’t even know if the selectors would remember me. I believed it was gone after the third year. I received the call after we won the IPL, and I was overjoyed,” he added.
Regarding his subpar 2021 performances, Varun Chakravarthy said, “I know fans are emotional.”
In addition, Varun Chakravarthy made a startling discovery. He claimed that some persons had attempted to follow him to his home in addition to sending him threatening calls. He did, however, caution that subpar performances might infuriate and upset supporters. The sly spinner, however, appeared to be overjoyed after winning the Champions Trophy with the ball and receiving applause from the crowd.
“I find it hard to accept that everything positive is occurring at once. I’d like to go further with it. I understand how harsh the criticism can be because I have experienced setbacks. I got threat calls following the 2021 World Cup. Avoid visiting India. You can’t, even if you try. I had to hide at times when someone approached my residence and tried to find me. A couple of folks on motorcycles followed me as I rode back from the airport. It occurs. I can appreciate how sentimental fans may be. However, I am content when I reflect on those things and the recognition I am currently getting,” Chakravarthy said.
