Following their thrilling victory over New Zealand in the final, five members of India, the 2025 ICC Men’s Champions Trophy winners, were chosen for the Team of the Tournament.
Mitchell Santner was named captain of the Black Caps, while four members of their team, including Player of the Tournament Rachin Ravindra, made the roster. After scoring two hundreds and topping the run-scoring records with 263 runs, Ravindra seemed a sure pick to be at the top of the order. He is dangerous wherever he bats, as evidenced by his 108 in the semi-final match against South Africa and his knock of 112 against Bangladesh, which helped New Zealand cross the finish line.
After Afghanistan won their first-ever ICC Men’s Champions Trophy match in their debut, two Afghan players were also included in the squad. Ibrahim Zadran joins Ravindra at the top of the order. With a spectacular match-winning knock of 177, the highest-ever Champions Trophy score, against England in the group stage, the 23-year-old Afghan more than made his mark on the competition.
Virat Kohli of India, who ended sixth in the run-scoring statistics with 218 at an average of 54.50, comes in at number three. In the group stage victory over Pakistan, Kohli scored an unforgettable undefeated century. In the semi-final victory over world champions Australia, he scored an important 84. Following successful tournaments, teammates KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer join him in the middle order.
With two half-centuries to enable him reach 243 runs overall, Iyer was India’s leading scorer. Rahul, on the other hand, concluded with an average of 140 courtesy to undefeated performances of 42 and 34 in the semifinal and final, respectively.
Glenn Phillips of New Zealand is chosen at number six following an outstanding showing in the field and at bat. In addition to his unbeaten 49, the 28-year-old claimed two wickets against South Africa in the semi-final and hit a half-century against Pakistan. His diving one-handed catch to eliminate Shubman Gill in the final was one of three memorable takes throughout the tournament.
The second Afghan named to the squad is Azmatullah Omarzai. The fast-bowling all-rounder finished with seven wickets at 20 and 126 runs at 42.00 after having an incredible tournament with both bat and ball.
Santner was named team captain after he finished the competition with nine wickets, which was tied for second place, but more significantly, he took wickets when it mattered most. In the final, his ability to take potentially game-changing wickets was on full display. He dismissed Shubman Gill and then took out Iyer with the aid of a brilliant Phillips catch.
Mohammed Shami of India was chosen after finishing with nine wickets, capping a successful comeback from injury. Despite missing the final because of a shoulder injury sustained during New Zealand’s victory over South Africa in the semi-final, Matt Henry finished as the tournament’s top wicket-taker with 10 at 16.70.
Varun Chakravarthy, who claimed nine wickets in just three games, completes the squad. In all three of his games, he bowled his whole allotment and never went for more than 49. Axar Patel of India was chosen as the 12th man.
