As the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2025) caravan travels ahead of Match 10, the women’s T20 cricket is in full swing. Notably, the match between the Delhi Capitals Women (DC-W) and Gujarat Giants Women (GJ-W) took place at Bengaluru’s famed M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The Giants had already demonstrated inconsistency this season, winning just one of their three WPL 2025 appearances before this encounter. The team was looking for a change of luck in Bangalore after finishing the tournament’s Vadodara leg. They only managed to score a meager 127, though, as their hitting problems persisted at the new location.
Talking Points from WPL 2025 Match 10:
1. Meg Lanning’s team uses the circumstances to frighten Delhi
It’s interesting to note that the field frequently turns out to be a hitter’s paradise, which is why the venue is notorious for producing high-scoring games. Meg Lanning, the captain of DC, chose to take the field first after winning the toss. GJ-W failed to score runs readily and continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, therefore the decision was spot on. It was anticipated that key players like Ashleigh Gardner, Laura Wolvaardt, Beth Mooney, and Harleen Deol would step up for the squad, but they were unable to turn their starts into significant contributions. Their batting has fallen short of expectations, with the exception of the first game, in which the Gujarat Giants scored 201. Gujarat ultimately gave their opponent a very small target as a result.
2. Jes Jonassen shines with the bat, and Shafali Varma misses fifty
Meg Lanning, the captain and opener for the Delhi Capitals Women, was removed in the fourth over after being well thrashed by Kashvi Gautam, giving them an early setback as they chased a modest goal of 128 runs. Aside from that, Shafali Varma played aggressively and scored 44 runs off of 27 balls. Following Lanning’s departure, Jess Jonassen, an all-rounder, joined her as another Australian.
The Australian led Delhi to a resounding victory over Gujarat with a scorching undefeated half-century (61* off 32 balls). Despite the lackluster contributions of Jemimah Rodrigues and Annabel Sutherland, who were dismissed quickly after each other, Jonassen continued her innings without faltering and prevented the opposition from regaining the upper hand. With 29 balls remaining, the Delhi Capitals defeated the Gujarat Giants Women by a commanding six wickets. Jes Jonassen won Player of the Match (POTM) for her exciting knock.
3. The Delhi Capitals Women win the WPL 2025 championship.
With this victory, Gujarat Giants Women are sagging at the bottom of the WPL 2025 points standings, while Delhi Capitals Women rise to the top. Here are the captains’ comments regarding the outcome of their respective teams’ games in the interim.
Who Said What?
Losing skipper, Ashleigh Gardner
“If you look at DC’s bowling line-up, they’ve got four international quicks. So it was always going to be challenging in the powerplay. They bowled exceptionally well, and put us under pressure. We didn’t do well with the bat. We know the potential Fulmali and Kanwar have. To see them take the opportunity and put on a 50-run partnership was fantastic to see. That was a bit of shock to see Jonna come out [at No. 3]! There’s nothing to be concerned about as such. When you lose three-plus wickets in the powerplay, it puts you under pressure. So hopefully, we can reflect on that. We have a really quick turnaround.”
Winning Skipper, Meg Lanning
“We bounced back really nicely. Kappy and Shikha take wickets upfront, and it makes it easy. There’s been a little bit there for the bowlers; a bit of nibble. It’s just about improving each game, and tightening areas which you haven’t nailed. We need to keep winning. As a bowling group, if you put the ball in the right areas, there’s a bit for you. Feel like we’ve been improving all the time. It’s nice when something comes off like that [on promoting Jonassen to No. 3].”
Player of the Match, Jess Jonassen
“Loved it. Bit surprised by the opportunity, but always happy to take it. Had a bit of luck early, but that’s part of the T20 game. With the new ball, for the seamers, there was a bit of shape early. It’s huge [to be shown confidence in]. It was nice that it was able to come off. It’s amazing; we’ve got almost all bases covered. Kapp is world class, and showed that again. Sadhu coming in for her first game, and taking a wicket. It’s nice to know that in a certain situation we have someone put their hand up.”
