UP Warriorz’s (UP-W) batting had some potential in the current Women’s Premier League (WPL 2025) Match 8, but they had trouble capitalizing in the middle overs. Despite an early blitz from Kiran Navgire (17 off 20 balls), her side was unable to build on it. Notably, the team captained by Deepti Sharma had not yet opened their account in the current 2025 editions of the T20 cricket tournament and was on a losing run prior to this match.
Talking Points from WPL 2025’s Match 8:
1. Another UP-W top order collapse
Because of its small boundaries and steady bounce, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium’s surface is ideal for batting. Warriorz has unable to turn their beginnings into a sizable total in spite of this. The rest of the top order, including captain Deepti Sharma, was unable to get going, despite Tahlia McGrath’s methodical knock of 24 off 23 balls, which attempted to hold one end.
2. Chinelle Henry’s all-around effort that won the match
However, UP-W returned to the game with a respectable total of 177/9 in their 20-over quota thanks to the explosive West Indies all-rounder Chinelle Henry’s quickfire fifty (62 off 23 balls). In addition, Henry’s bowling helped defend the 178-run target. She further hurt the Delhi Capitals Women’s (DC-W) prospects of chasing the target by taking Marizanne Kapp’s wicket. Overall, even though it was a bit pricey, it did assist her team maintain momentum in the bowling department. Chinelle Henry was chosen as the Player of the Match (POTM) for her overall performance.
3. Against the Delhi Capitals Women, Grace Harris scores a hat-trick.
The Capitals’ choice to bat second in response to the run chase most likely backfired. Following the dismissal of captain Meg Lanning and her opening partner Shafali Varma, UP-W’s vigorous bowling effort stopped DC-W’s momentum. The game’s most significant moment occurred during the last over. In her last over, Grace Harris claimed an incredible hat-trick.
Notably, Harris took out Arundhati Reddy, Shikha Pandey, and Annabel Sutherland. The Delhi Capitals Women consequently suffered a 33-run defeat. This was UP Warriorz’s first victory of the WPL 2025 season, ending their losing run.
Who Said What?
Losing skipper, Meg Lanning
I thought we did a lot right in the first 15 overs [while bowling]. Little bit of nibble and swing. But Chinelle batted brilliantly and we did not have any answers. Would be nice to slow it down a little but we were under a bit of time pressure. She batted extremely well, put us under pressure and we did not have any answers. [Surface] There was a little bit in it for the bowlers. The batters all evening were successful if they stuck in. We have played extremely well in patches, but haven’t been as good in other times. Just have to put everything together going forward.
Winning Skipper, Deepti Sharma
Very important win. Whenever you win, you feel nice and the mindset is very positive and you get good thoughts. All the batters were coming in with a clear mind. We just wanted to get solid partnerships. Henry was great. We just asked her to back her strengths. [Improvements] We really need to pull up our socks in the fielding. We want to take the momentum forward.
Player of the Match, Chinelle Henry
[Plans] My role in the team is clear. I have to finish the game and I have been doing that pretty well. It is just about backing my skills. I just went about going out there and executing it. When I went out, the ball was moving but it was all about backing my strengths. Tonight, it was really great for me. To come here and to pick up from where i left was really amazing. [Dropped catches] We are a good unit, regardless. It happens. It is just about going back and doing it in the training. The next game is against RCB and the crowd is going to be loud. We just have to back each other and do well for the team.
