Champions Trophy 2025: Pakistan's chances of qualifying following their defeat against India

Pakistan’s hopes of qualifying were made more difficult on February 23 as they lost to India by six wickets in Match 5 of the current Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Prior to the event, the highly anticipated match had already generated a lot of buzz, and this excitement only increased following the two teams’ individual opening matches.

Although India defeated Bangladesh by a commanding six-wicket margin, Pakistan, who are hosting their first ICC event in 29 years, did not have a happy start to the competition. New Zealand convincingly outscored them by 60 runs. Because of such outcome, Pakistan had to win the current match.

Pakistan’s chances of qualifying if they lose versus India: Champions Trophy

Scenario 1: Pakistan defeats BAN, NZ loses to BAN, and IND loses to NZ

Bangladesh and Pakistan will each receive two points.
With four points, New Zealand and India will advance.

Scenario 2: IND defeats NZ, PAK defeats BAN, and NZ loses to BAN

New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Pakistan will all have two points apiece.
With six points, India will be eligible.
To be eligible, Pakistan needs to outperform both Bangladesh and New Zealand in terms of net run rate.

Scenario 3: India loses to NZ, Pakistan defeats BAN, and NZ defeats BAN

Pakistan will receive two points.
Bangladesh will not win.
With six points, New Zealand will lead the group and join India in qualifying.

Scenario 4: IND defeats NZ, PAK defeats BAN, and NZ defeats BAN

Pakistan will receive two points.
Bangladesh will not win at the end.
New Zealand and India will be eligible.

The must-win scenario for Pakistan

Therefore, it is evident that Pakistan’s chances of surviving the tournament depend on the outcome of the Indo-Pak match.
