Mehidy Hasan Miraz was named Najmul Hossain Shanto’s deputy for the 2025 Champions Trophy by the Bangladesh Cricket Board on Thursday. The entire Bangladeshi team will depart for Dubai tonight in preparation for their tournament opener against India, the runners-up from the last edition.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz has played for Bangladesh in 103 ODIs altogether. He recently captained the team on their tour of the West Indies while the full-time captain was sidelined due to a groin issue.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz led the ODI and Test matches, while Litton Das was captain for the T20I series.
Bangladesh not only easily won the ODI series but also won the T20Is by a score of 0–3, and they went on to draw the Test series.
The pace-bowling unit will be significantly bolstered by the addition of Hasan Mahmud and Khaled Ahmed to the squad for their encounter against India in Dubai.
“On Saturday, two defenders, Khale Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud, will go to Dubai to train with the Bangladesh Champions Trophy squad. The BCB said Thursday that “the bowlers will go back home after Bangladesh’s tournament opener against India in Dubai on February 20.”
Out of the last eight seasons, Bangladesh has played in five of the renowned ODI competition. Although they did not compete, they hosted the inaugural tournament, which was then called the Wills International Cup in 1998. They reached the competition’s semifinals in the 2017 edition, which was their greatest performance to date. Bangladesh is in Group A together with India, Pakistan, and New Zealand.
To date, Miraz has captained Bangladesh in four ODIs, however the side has lost each time. Mehidy will need to meet the high standards set for him if Bangladesh is to have any hope of advancing to the knockout stages.
