India and England arrive at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack for the second ODI with quite different objectives after winning the first ODI in Nagpur with relative ease. While England will look to improve on their record of not having won an ODI series in India since 1984, India’s preparations for the Champions Trophy will benefit from wrapping up a series victory without the strain of a final.
England got off to a great start in the first ODI at Nagpur, even scoring 26 runs in an over, but they faltered in the middle. Even two bottom order fifties could not break the stifling grip that India’s bowlers had placed on England. After Phil Salt made a fast fifty to start, India was dragged back to restrain England by Ravindra Jadeja and Harshit Rana.
However, India’s pursuit wasn’t the most seamless. Even though India lost both of their openers early on, Shreyas Iyer responded with a counterattacking fifty to put India in front. Axar Patel and Shubman Gill both contributed with a pivotal partnership and their own fifties, and despite India’s final-minute mini-collapse, the chase was over.

The Cuttack surface also leans into being easier to chase on and in general low-scoring with more help for spin than pace. Conditions like those might actually play into India’s hands.

Top player battles to watch out for in IND vs ENG:
Joe Root vs Ravindra Jadeja
England’s chances in this series and the Champions Trophy largely rest on Joe Root, who is regarded as one of the greatest spin hitters of our time. However, the majority of his fights with Ravindra Jadeja have gone in the southpaw’s way. With a strike rate of 86.46 and four dismissals at an average of 28.75, Root has scored 115 runs in 133 balls.
Rohit Sharma vs Mark Wood
In this style, India’s captain has hardly ever had any issue with Mark Wood’s rockets. At an average of 87, Sharma has been removed just once while scoring 87 runs from 101 balls at a strike rate of 86.13.
