In the current Test series against Sri Lanka, young Australian opener Sam Konstas recently discussed his feelings over not making the starting lineup. Australia’s selection for the Sri Lanka series included the 19-year-old, who made an impression against India in his debut for his country, but he was discharged in the middle of the tour without playing a match. Travis Head was instead elevated by the club management to open the innings with Usman Khawaja.
During the just finished Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Sam Konstas established himself by smashing a fast-paced 60-run knock in his first Test match.
His approach and hitting style earned him a spot in the Sri Lanka series. In the subcontinent, the Australian side chose a more seasoned group, so Konstas had to warm the bench despite his outstanding start.
The right-hander discussed his exclusion from the starting lineup and the chance he had to pick up tips from some of the team’s top players. He said it was a good experience to play with cricketers like Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja, and Head, even if he was unhappy not to get a game.
I considered myself really fortunate to be a member of the squad. Learning from the best players, like as Steve Smith, Travis Head, and Usman Khawaja, and how their approaches vary in specific circumstances is also evident. It taught me a lot. I recognised the rationale. I see it as a fantastic learning experience, and I will seize any future opportunities I may have with the Test team. In light of Travis Head’s dominance and status as a gaming legend, I can see why he started the batting, Konstas told CODE Sports.
Konstas is now back in Australia and will play in the Sheffield Shield for New South Wales, where he hopes to maintain his excellent play and earn a call-up to the national squad once more. In his first series against India, his involvement in on-field activities was just as important as his batting performances.
