England chose to bat first after winning the toss in the first ODI of the three-match series. The two openers had a really good start. As England’s total quadrupled from 26 to 52, Harshit Rana, an ODI debutant, was hammered for 26 runs in the sixth over of the innings. The second time he was brought on to bowl during the powerplay, Harshit recovered spectacularly to take his first two wickets in the format.
Joe Root was defeated by a shot from Ravindra Jadeja. Before being stranded in front, Root, who was playing his first ODI since November 2023, could muster just 19 runs. By the end of the twenty-fifth over, Jadeja had bowled six consecutive overs. With four wickets lost and a total of 138, England was positioned respectably.
Jos Buttler, the captain, carried on with his successful run in the current white-ball series. He reached his first half-century on Indian soil after 17 ODI innings. Axar Patel’s delivery soon undid his efforts, but Jacob Bethell, his partner, continued to pound. The 21-year-old reached his second half-century in ODI cricket on the last over’s ball. In the end, England was skittled out for 248 after 47.4 overs.
During his first three overs, Jofra Archer was quite accurate. In his ODI debut, Yashasvi Jaiswal managed just 15 runs before Archer’s exquisite delivery split him in two. After Rohit Sharma left in the next over, India appeared to be in trouble. Nevertheless, Shreyas Iyer rushed to a 30-ball fifty after tearing apart Archer and then Brydon Carse. There were a few boundaries set for Jacob Bethell. However, by forcing him to turn around, Bethell had the last laugh.
At number five, Axar Patel was introduced to continue the left-right combination. He had already hit a four and a six in his innings, which had only lasted nine deliveries. Against England, Shubman Gill scored his first ODI fifty in the 25th over of the run-chase. India got closer to their goal with a 17-run over from Carse. Rashid’s delightfully flighted delivery bowled Axar through the gate an over after he had scored his third ODI half-century. KL Rahul didn’t make a significant contribution to the scoring. He was fired for only two.
Buttler double-batted one to Gill at mid-on, bringing him only 13 runs short of his century. With 68 deliveries remaining, Jadeja’s two boundaries off Saqib Mahmood gave India a four-wicket victory. With the exception of Rashid’s cunning leg-spin, none of the other English bowlers appeared sharp enough to cause the Indians any problems. India won the white-ball series for the fifth time.

Responsible knock from Vice captain Shubman Gill. Made this chase one sided. He’s just too good in ODI cricket. pic.twitter.com/VKcoM2XcQX

We had a term in the team ‘Lambi race ka Ghoda’ for certain players. Meaning someone who will be around for a long time in Indian cricket. That’s what Shubman Gill is! 🙌🙌

Central Contract was stripped off of Shreyas Iyer when he gave India all time batting performance at a ODI WC by middler order batter.
BCCI & ICT fans has always been ungrateful to Shreyas. He always done well and still never received enough respect!pic.twitter.com/XguRcQ7RkN
