Before the upcoming Champions Trophy and the Tri-nation series against South Africa and New Zealand, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed a new team manager, which has caused a lot of controversy. Many changes have also been made to the team’s staff and management.
Hina Munawar has been appointed as the team manager.
She is a police officer with a good background in operations and security, and she would be the first female team manager for Pakistan. In addition to serving in the high-risk SWAT region with the Frontier Constabulary, Munawar will now be the team’s operations manager. Senior retired bureaucrat Naveed Akram Cheema will continue to lead the unit.
In addition, she will become the team’s first female manager. Although several supporters and analysts have expressed doubt about the PCB’s choice, the board has expressed great faith in Munawar. As she is still employed by the Pakistani Police Service, it is believed that Munawar was brought onto the board on deputation by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
“She has worked in strategic and leadership roles, helping to streamline various operations, so perhaps her appointment is aimed at streamlining operations within the team and between players and the board,” a source close to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said.
As the first female district officer in Swat’s Frontier Constabulary, she broke down barriers between genders in a usually male-dominated job, the source continued.
The challenging schedule that Pakistan faces
New Zealand and South Africa will be the opponents of Pakistan in a tri-series match. On February 8, the hosts will play New Zealand at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore in the opening game of the series. On February 12, the hosts will play South Africa at the National Stadium in Karachi.
The team is grouped with Bangladesh, New Zealand, and India for the Champions Trophy. Pakistan’s first match is scheduled for February 19 against New Zealand, while their next match is scheduled for February 23 against India, their bitter rivals. On February 27, they will play Bangladesh in their final group match.
