Joe Root eyes T20I return after SA20 success

Joe Root has been selected for England’s three-match series against India, indicating that he will be returning to the 50-over format. Recently, the renowned batter talked about his desire to return to playing all formats for his country. It is noteworthy that Root has not participated in an ODI since the 2023 World Cup 50-over, and his most recent T20I was in 2019.

The right-hander Root, who is playing for the Paarl Royals in SA20 2025, has had a stellar first season thus far, scoring 279 runs at an average of 55.80 and striking at a pace of 140.20 in eight games. Now, he will join England before the ODI series against India. Root stated that his goal is to return to England’s T20I lineup and that he is excited to participate in future T20 competitions.

Just trying to play cricket as well as I can: Joe Root

“In my opinion, you always play better when you’re not on the squad. All I’ll do is try to play cricket as best I can. Look at that England T20Is team; it’s loaded with good guys. Root told SA20, “They can deprive the world’s top bowlers of their game.”

“I want to represent England in every format as much as possible. To show myself and see where it leads, I must, however, play more Twenty20 cricket,” he continued.

With 1556 runs at an average of 55.57 in 17 Test matches last year, Root was the top run scorer in the longest format of cricket. He had an incredible batting performance. The Sheffield native will be looking to acquire some experience in the ODI series against India, as the 2025 Champions Trophy is imminent.
