SA20 2025: Paarl Royals become 1st T20 team to finish 20 overs with spinners

The SA20 league stage is nearing its conclusion, and the club leading the competition at the moment is the Paarl Royals, who have won six of their seven games and lost only one.

The team led by David Miller triumphed in their most recent match, defeating the Pretoria Capitals by 11 runs and successfully defending a below-average score of 140 to win their fifth straight game and maintain their supremacy. The game’s standout performer was English batsman Joe Root, who got a few wickets with the ball in the second innings and was undefeated at 78 in the first.

But the Paarl Royals’ amazing achievement wasn’t the only one; following this game, they also made history.

The fact that they entered this game with four specialized spinners—Dunith Wellalage, Bjorn Fortuin, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Nqabayomzi Peter—and that Dayyaan Galiem was the only acknowledged pacer was already surprising. Nevertheless, Root’s part-time spin was favored over Galiem, who was never employed throughout the match. For the first time in a Twenty20 match, spinners bowled all 20 overs in an innings.

Fortuin and Dunith Wellalage, two teenage Sri Lankan celebrities, split the new ball and finished with amazing numbers. Wellalage finished the match with 1/16, while Fortuin concluded with 2/20 in his four overs. Even Afghanistan’s mystery spinner Mujeeb was economical, scoring 2/17 in his four overs. Ultimately, Peter and Root ensured that the Capitals were unable to escape in the last overs.

Considering their performance this season, the Royals will seek to go closer to taking home the trophy in the third tournament edition. In the previous two seasons, they qualified for the playoffs but failed to win a single knockout match.
