Jay Shah was replaced as the Secretary of the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) by former Assam cricketer Devajit Saikia, which is a significant move for the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India). Notably, Saikia filled the void left by Jay Shah’s assumption of the International Cricket Council chairmanship.
Curiously, Saikia’s first assignment as Secretary was to go to the board meeting with Roger Binny, the president of the BCCI, to discuss India’s performance in the just finished Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The meeting was thorough and included in-depth talks of the team’s performance, particularly with regard to the batting order. The management was curious as to why Indian hitters had failed to perform in spite of having a formidable lineup. They also concentrated on figuring out the fundamental causes and how to address them,” India Today cited an insider as saying.
The source added that the meeting has been deferred and that the required actions would be done until the conclusion of the 2025 Champions Trophy. It is important to note that the BCCI called the meeting in response to India’s poor BGT results.
After winning the first Test in Perth, Team India had a fantastic start to the series. However, with a single draw in Brisbane and defeats in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney. Consequently, after many years, Australia won the trophy, defeating Rohit Sharma’s team. With a few exceptions, the Indian hitters did not perform well during the series. The sources further claim that one of the main topics of discussion at the meeting was India’s batting performance.
Devajit Saikia has been chosen by Binny to serve as the temporary joint secretary.
Regarding Saikia, the recently appointed secretary of the BCCI will strive to do his duties to the highest standard possible. a former first-class cricket player who has worked in administration, law, and sport. Saikia left cricket to pursue a career in law.
In the future, he will be the new secretary of the BCCI. For those who are unfamiliar, Chairman Binny chose Saikia as the acting official to fulfil the position of joint secretary in the BCCI after Shah was approved as the head of the highest cricket regulatory body, exercising his special powers under the Indian board’s constitution.
