Part of me thinks Sam Konstas won’t play even 10 Test matches: Steve Harmison

Part of me thinks Sam Konstas won’t play even 10 Test matches: Steve Harmison

In the fourth Test of the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Sam Konstas, one of the up-and-coming talents on the Australian cricket circuit, began his international career. Interestingly, the young player got his career off to a great start by attacking the Indian bowling unit and scoring a quick 60 in his first innings.

He has undoubtedly sparked extensive discussions about his future in the Australian setup, even though his performance hasn’t quite lived up to the expectations he had set during the aforementioned 65-ball knock in Melbourne. Steve Harmison, a former English bowler, recently talked about his conflicted thoughts over the young cricket player’s prospects in the red-ball team.

Sam Konstas won’t play in even ten Test matches, in my opinion.

A part of me believes that if this kid does well, he could become a huge star. “He has the big shots, the ramps, the chat, and the scoops, but does he have a defensive strategy to open the batting in a Test match against the best in the world?” Harmison

When I see him, I believe he merely wants to be Warner David: Steve Harmison

Steve Harmison thought Konstas needed to put in a lot of work to become as successful as the former Australian southpaw David Warner, but he compared the young player’s style to Warner’s. In fact, he seemed to be making fun of Konstas by saying that in a high-stress Test series like The Ashes, he would love to see him open the innings against the English attack.

Although he is technically far from being as brilliant as David Warner, I think he just wants to be him. If he is starting the batting against England, I’d be content. Yes, I would. I am aware that we are far from The Ashes,” he continued.

Interestingly, Konstas has joined Australia’s 16-man list for the forthcoming two-Test visit to Sri Lanka. Even though Konstas’ spin was not tested at the BGT, he will undoubtedly be tested when he faces Lankan spinners with decks that encourage spin. Remarkably, the roster also includes Nathan McSweeney, who Konstas replaced at the top of the order following the third Test match against India.
