'He's gone through it all before, so he knows exactly what to do' - Faf du Plessis backs Virat Kohli to turn things around

Virat Kohli has been under fire since his disastrous batting performance in the just finished Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25. With just 190 runs at a pitiful average of 23.75 in nine innings, Kohli helped India lose the series by a score of 1-3. During the series, the former India skipper was dismissed seven times. Every time he was dismissed, he edged to the slip cordon or wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

Since last year, Virat Kohli has been averaging less than 25 in the longest format.

In order to get back among the runs, some analysts have recommended that the Delhi batsman return to domestic cricket. Kohli’s teammate Faf du Plessis, who commanded the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) from 2022 to 2024, supported the renowned batsman to get through his dry spell with the willow.

“I’ve been through it all before, so he knows exactly what to do,” du Plessis was cited by India Today as saying. “I know someone like him is super super motivated.”

The former South Africa captain stated that it is best to let the Indian legend make the final decision on the prospect of Kohli ending his Test career. It’s really, really personal. As a player, no one can tell you when your time is over; you’ll know,” du Plessis said.

Every player has a unique experience: Faf du Plessis

Du Plessis recalls the moment he decided to quit playing Test cricket. According to the 40-year-old, he no longer felt the need or desire to play red-ball cricket and believed that it was time to let the new generation make an impression.

“Every gamer experiences it differently. That question must be answered by each player. I can recall when I had that moment. I simply understood that from the standpoint of Test cricket. I no longer felt as hungry or driven, and I thought that stage was a good time to let new men join and get involved in the T20 game. Du Plessis said, “I wanted to do that at the point where I still felt like I was at the top of my game.”
