‘‘Whatever they plan, they will plan for the best’’- Gautam Gambhir on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's future

The head coach of India, Gautam Gambhir, shared his thoughts on the retirement rumours involving Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the country’s top players. India lost the series 3-1 after losing by six wickets in the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at Sydney. Despite winning the first Test of the series in Perth, the Indian squad was unable to capitalise and lost in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney.

The future of veterans Rohit and Kohli in the game’s longest format has been the subject of much conjecture due to their inability to establish themselves. The pair still has a strong desire to succeed, and Gambhir stated that whatever choice they make will be in the “best interest” of the squad when asked about their future plans.

“I’m not allowed to discuss any player’s future.” They also have a choice. What I can say is that they remain difficult individuals who still possess desire and hunger. And perhaps they’ll be able to keep going and advance it. Ultimately, though, as we are all aware, they will always plan for the best,” Gambhir stated following the match.

The nation is the most significant factor: Gautam Gambhir.

Notably, Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, was absent from the first Test of the series since his second kid was born. He then resigned as captain for the fifth Test because of his poor performance as both a batsman and a captain. Regarding the same, Gambhir gave Rohit credit for reserving his spot for the series’ last Test.

I want to mention that a great deal has been stated and a great deal of reports have been written. We can be a little more reasonable about that, at least. I don’t see anything wrong with a leader—even if they aren’t a captain—making this choice before their players. Because of this, a lot of things have been said,” Gambhir stated.

“In the end, the national team is not sitting there; the team and the nation are the most important things,” he continued.
