'If you don't think about team, then why are you here?'- Rohit Sharma gives sneak peek into mindset behind SCG decision

During an interview at lunch on Day 2 of the fifth and final Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the storied Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday, January 4, Rohit Sharma has been praised profusely for his open remarks.

There were rumours that Rohit’s decision to leave India’s playing XI for the fifth Test meant the end of his career as captain of the country in the longest format of cricket. He clarified, though, by stating that he “stepped down” and stayed out of the game to give an in-form player a chance to get a look-in because he had been having trouble scoring runs.

According to Rohit Sharma, his choice was ideal for the squad as India aims to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and level the series.

“I haven’t travelled this far to just observe. My goal is to help the team win games. Ever since I entered the Indian dressing room in 2007, nothing has changed. However, there are instances when you have to comprehend what the team needs. Why are you here if team isn’t on your mind? The key is teamwork. I am this way, but I cannot speak for others. If someone doesn’t like this, that’s fine,” Rohit clarified.

“My bat isn’t producing runs. Form is absent. There can’t be too many guys on the team who aren’t playing well. The choice was challenging. However, the idea was about what the team required,” he continued.

At a pitiful average of 6.20, Rohit had only managed to score 31 runs in five innings during the Test series. The Nagpur native stated that he hopes to improve his situation in the next months and so has no intention of retiring from the red-ball format.
