Following the June 2024 T20 World Cup, Rahul Dravid‘s time as India’s head coach came to an end, and Gautam Gambhir assumed leadership. After he successfully coached the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who won the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to hire the former India opener, who had no significant coaching experience.
India has had some unsatisfactory results under his leadership, losing an ODI series to Sri Lanka before defeating New Zealand at home. The Rohit Sharma-led team missed a 1-0 lead after winning the first Test, falling behind 1-2 in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. To keep the coveted Border-Gavaskar Trophy and their aspirations of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC), India would need to defeat Australia in the fifth and final Test.
According to the most recent source, if India’s performances don’t improve before the Champions Trophy in February or March, Gautam Gambhir job as head coach may be seriously threaten.
“The Champions Trophy comes up next, followed by a Test match. According to a top BCCI official who spoke on condition of anonymity, “even Gautam Gambhir’s position wouldn’t be safe if the performance doesn’t improve.” India Today reported this statement.
Additionally, it is acknowledged that Gambhir has not had excellent contact with his players. The players were in constant communication with his predecessors, Dravid and Ravi Shastri. The team, which isn’t as seasoned as Rohit or Kohli but also not as inexperienced as Harshit Rana or Nitish Reddy, hasn’t shown much faith in him.
