Jasprit Bumrah records highest points tally by Indian bowler in ICC Test rankings

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah solidified his place at the top of the ICC Men’s Test Bowling Rankings with another successful Test in Melbourne, finishing with a nine-wicket match haul. This achievement is the greatest rating points total ever attained by an Indian bowler.

After tying Ravichandran Ashwin for the previous high of 904, Jasprit Bumrah has risen to the shortlist for both the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year award and

the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year award for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy. He currently shares 17th place on the all-time list with English spinner Derek Underwood from the previous era, having amassed 907 rating points.

England seamers Sydney Barnes (932) and George Lohmann (931), who played over a century ago, top the list. Imran Khan (922) and Muttiah Muralidaran (920) come in third and fourth, respectively.

Cummins advances in all three lists: With 914 rating points, Australia’s captain Pat Cummins is tied for fifth place with Glenn McGrath on that list. He also improved in the most recent rankings update after assisting in the victory of their ICC World Test Championship series against India in Melbourne.

In the first weekly update of 2025, which also takes into account performances in the first Test matches between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan in Bulawayo and South Africa and Pakistan in Centurion, Cummins improves his career-best ranking of third on the all-rounders’ list, surpassing his previous ranking of fifth in August 2019.

With 837 rating points, his three wickets in each innings have helped him move up one spot to third place among bowlers, while his scores of 49 and 41 have also moved him up 10 spots to 97th place among batsmen.

Marco Jansen of South Africa has risen to a career-high fifth place after surpassing 800 rating points for the first time with a second innings total of six for 52, while Pakistani seamer Mohammad Abbas has returned to the rankings in 23rd place after taking seven wickets throughout the game.

Because of their efforts in Centurion, Naseem Shah (up six spots to 33rd) and Dane Paterson (up eight spots to 46th) have advanced, while Australian bowlers Scott Boland (up seven spots to 38th) and Brian Bennett (up 48 spots to 94th) have also risen in the rankings.

Saud Shakeel achieves career-best ranking: Saud Shakeel, a left-hander for Pakistan, reached a career-high sixth place in the Test Batting Rankings after scoring 84 runs in the second innings. With 140 runs, Steve Smith has moved up three spots to seventh place, while Yashaswi Jaiswal, the opener for India, has moved up to fourth place with a career-high 854 rating points thanks to his 84 and 82.

Aiden Markram, an opener for South Africa, is now in 16th rank after moving up eight spots thanks to his Player of the Match performances of 89 and 37 in Centurion, while Nitish Kumar Reddy of India is up 20 spots to 53rd following his heroic century at number eight.

Sean Williams’ 154-point innings has moved him up to 19th place with 653 points, the most any Zimbabwean batter has had since Brendan Taylor’s 684 in 2014.

Afghanistan pair in the limelight: Hashmatullah Shahidi (246) and Rahmat Shah (234) of Afghanistan both exceeded their nation’s previous greatest individual score, earning them promotions to 52nd and 57th place, respectively.

In the ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings: After the first two games of their T20I series, which hosts New Zealand leads 2-0, Sri Lankan batter Pathun Nissanka has risen three spots to sixth place, while New Zealand bowlers Mitchell Santner (up five spots to ninth) and Matheesha Pathirana (up eight spots to 26th) have risen in the bowling rankings.
