‘You should celebrate’ - Ravi Shastri gives on India's follow-on celebrations at Gabba

For both Australia and India, the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25 has been an emotional roller coaster. Australia won the second Test in Adelaide, the Indian side won the first Test in Perth, and the third match ended in a draw.

Australia lost control of the third game in the series. The top order of the Indian team was dismissed cheaply after the hosts scored 445 runs in the first innings. However, the Indian team was able to avoid the follow-on because of the knocks from Ravindra Jadeja, Akash Deep, and Ravindra Jadeja.

Experts soon began talking about the festivities that followed the avoidance of the follow-on. Former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri spoke up about the same topic and shared his thoughts.

“You ought to rejoice. With 35–36 runs required, the final two had to show a lot of character. They understood the significance of that effort in the dressing room within the framework of the series, as evidenced by their celebration. It’s one thing to keep up, but it’s quite another to be 2-3 down instead of threatening the Australian top order. “It is completely justified,” the ICC cited Shastri as saying.

I was reminded of the Lord’s celebration: Ravi Shastri

Ravi Shastri further disclosed that the jubilation brought back memories of the time when India won the 2021 series against England thanks to the duo of Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah at Lord’s.

Shastri remarked, “It brought back memories of the celebration during the COVID-19 pandemic when Jasprit and Mohammed Shami formed a partnership at Lord’s that completely changed the game.”

On the last day, England was the clear favourite to win the Test. And by the end of the day, India had won the Test match, “and that partnership, I think of about 80 or 90, suddenly turned the game on its head,” he continued.
