Following the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Brisbane, veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently declared his retirement from international cricket. A 14-year career was ended by the verdict, which also addressed the passionate letter from star batsman Virat Kohli.
With 537 wickets in 106 games, Ashwin finished his Test career as India’s second-highest wicket-taker, after only Anil Kumble. Ashwin became a reliable all-rounder with his enormous batting output, which included 3503 runs and six hundreds.
He considered his career and the challenges ahead during the post-match press conference, where he unexpectedly announced his retirement. India is preparing for an international trip of England, and the announcement followed his small contribution in the current series.
Ashwin’s long-time teammate and close buddy Kohli posted an emotional message on social media.
“You’ve played with me for fourteen years, and I got a little emotional when you announced your retirement today. I had memories of all the years we spent playing together. Ash, I have loved every minute of our adventure together. You will always be regarded as an Indian cricket icon because of your unparalleled brilliance and game-winning contributions. I hope you have a wonderful life with your family and in all the other things that come your way. In an emotional celebratory message for Ashwin on X (previously Twitter), Kohli wrote, “With a great deal of respect and love, thanks for everything buddy.”
In his attention-grabbing response, the spinner mentioned teaming up with the 36-year-old batsman for the upcoming Test match at Melbourne Cricket Ground. Thank you, friend! I’ll be going out with you to bat at the MCG, just like I said,” he answered.
I’ve played with you for 14 years and when you told me today you’re retiring, it made me a bit emotional and the flashbacks of all those years playing together came to me.
