Next month, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the city’s pride, the renowned Wankhede Stadium, with lavish festivities. Today, MCA President Ajinkya Naik declared that the celebrations will begin on January 12, 2025, and end with a spectacular show at the historic stadium on January 19, 2025.
An unprecedented assembly of Mumbai’s domestic and international cricket legends, both past and present, will take place at the grand exhibition on January 19. Renowned performers Avadhoot Gupte and Ajay-Atul will also perform mesmerizingly during the event, which will culminate in a breathtaking laser show.
A unique 50th-anniversary logo was revealed to commemorate the event at a press conference that was attended by Apex Council members and MCA office bearers.
MCA President Ajinkya Naik also disclosed plans to celebrate the rich history of Wankhede Stadium, which has been adorned by cricketing greats like Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar, among other esteemed stalwarts, by releasing a commemorative coffee table book and postal stamp on January 19. On January 19, MCA will also congratulate Ashish Shelar, the previous MCA President and recently appointed cabinet minister in the Maharashtra government, and the Hon. Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis.
“The Wankhede Stadium is a national pride, and its 50th anniversary is a historic milestone for us,” Ajinkya Naik said in a statement marking the occasion. For both athletes and spectators, this stadium has served as the setting for innumerable treasured memories. We intend to commemorate its illustrious journey and rich cricketing history with a week-long festival and a spectacular evening event. We at MCA take great pride in honouring cricket’s history, and we’re excited to bring the whole cricketing community together for this historic occasion.
Having witnessed significant events in cricket history, Wankhede Stadium, which was constructed in 1974, is among the most recognisable cricketing venues in the world. The stadium has hosted innumerable memories, ranging from India’s historic 2011 ODI World Cup victory to Sachin Tendulkar’s final international match in 2013.
“Cricket fans have a special place in their hearts for Wankhede Stadium,” said Abhay Hadap, Secretary, MCA, during the news conference. I cordially encourage all Mumbaikars to partake in the festivities for the 50th anniversary, which is a significant milestone for MCA and the cricket community as a whole.
On January 12, as part of the celebration week, MCA officials will play cricket against bureaucrats and Consul Generals. On January 15, they will also host a special lunch to honour the dedication and achievements of Mumbai cricket’s unsung heroes for the groundskeepers of the organization’s clubs and grounds.
