After the third and final game of their ICC World Test Championship series against New Zealand, former England captain Joe Root took the top spot in the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings for the tenth time, surpassing fellow countryman Harry Brook, who held the position for just one week.
In the most recent weekly update that considers performances in matches played up until Tuesday, Joe Root scores of 32 and 54 propelled him to 895 rating points,
19 points ahead of Brook, who was dismissed for just zero and one in Hamilton as New Zealand rallied for a 423-run victory.
Kane Williamson closed the gap on the top two with scores of 44 and 156. Other home team batters who did well in the rankings were Mitchell Santner (up 17 places to 76th), Will Young (up 13 places to a career-best 36th), Tom Blundell (up three places to 37th), and Tom Latham (up six places to 31st).
Player of the Game With seven wickets in the Test, Santner reached a career-high 39th rank and scored 125 runs with the bat in his two innings.
A highlight of the series has been New Zealand new-ball bowler Matt Henry’s dominance against England opener Zak Crawley, who he dismissed in all six innings. His most recent six-wicket haul has moved him up two spots to a career-best seventh position.
England’s Gus Atkinson concluded his debut year of Test cricket at number 14, while his teammate Will O’Rourke is currently in joint-30th place, continuing his stellar start to his Test career.
Tim Southee, who initially achieved a career-high rating of third in June 2021, leaves Test cricket as number 26 among bowlers. A career-high ninth in ODIs and sixth in T20Is, he has also been among the top 10 bowlers in the other two formats.
West Indies spinner Akeal Hosein moved up three spots to the top of the T20I Rankings after taking two for 13 against Bangladesh in Kingston. He takes the number one spot from Adil Rashid of England, who held it for a year after taking it on December 14, 2023.
After hitting a century against Pakistan in Centurion, South Africa’s Reeza Hendricks returned to the top 10, while other players who advanced in the batting rankings were Saim Ayub of Pakistan, Muhammad Waseem of the United Arab Emirates, and Rovman Powell of the West Indies.
