'I think he himself will step down'- Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit Sharma's future in Test cricket

Fans of India are still disappointed by Rohit Sharma‘s dismal performance in Test cricket, which has caused many to doubt his future in red-ball cricket. Similarly, Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian great, hinted that the Hitman might decide to retire once the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is over.

The senior Indian batsmen have an opportunity to regain their form prior to the Melbourne Test after the Gabba Test ended in a draw. Thus far in the series, the Indian team’s best hitters have not had any influence. In the last three innings, Rohit Sharma has scored three, six, and 10 runs, respectively, making him one of the batters who has been having trouble in the series down under.

Numerous experts are discussing the Test captain’s potential retirement from the lengthy format of the game due to his present form. In his assessment of the batter’s form, Sunil Gavaskar suggested that he might as well declare his retirement if he fails to score.

“I’m confident that Rohit Sharma will have the chance to participate in the upcoming games.

But if he doesn’t score any runs at the end, I think he’ll take the call himself,” Gavaskar told ABC Sport.

Gavaskar provided more evidence for his claim by mentioning the final two series matches, the Sydney Test scheduled to start on January 3rd and the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, which will take place on December 26th.

He is an extremely diligent cricket player who doesn’t want to cause trouble for the squad. He is a cricket player who has a strong passion for Indian cricket. Therefore, I believe he will step down if he doesn’t score runs in the upcoming games. Gavaskar added.

The 37-year-old has not scored in the red ball format aside from the current Test series against Australia. He has scored 152 runs in the last 13 innings at an average of just 11.83. With two games left in the series, the captain who won the T20 World Cup in 2024 may have a chance to lead the team and keep the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
