'Want to go there and test our combinations'- Harmanpreet Kaur addresses press ahead of Australia series

Harmanpreet Kaur, captain of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team, revealed the combinations to hone the team for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup the next year as they get ready for the three-match ODI series against Australia. The Allan Border Field in Brisbane will host the team’s debut One-Day International on Thursday.

With nine victories in their previous 10 ODIs against India, the powerful Australians have dominated recent matches. Harmanpreet stressed that every game is a chance to try out novel combinations and tactics in spite of this.

“Well, all the games are important for us and we just want to go there and try our combinations and see whoever is doing well and giving them more opportunity,” she stated during the press conference held prior to the game.

Next year, India wants to find players who can perform well at home. She emphasised that assessing players for the World Cup is just as important as performing well during the series.

“At the same time, we want to give the young players who are performing really well a chance to see who is the best. Then, with the World Cup in mind, all those players who can perform well at home will just look to pick those players when we are playing the World Cup,” she continued.

The adoption of a new opening combination is one of the major developments for India in this series. Shafali Verma has been dropped after struggling this season, scoring just 108 runs at an average of 18 in six ODIs. Priya Punia is the other top-order batter in addition to the new opening combination because Yastika Bhatia is sidelined owing to a wrist ailment.

In order to find someone who can step up and have an influence on the pitch, the team will also be examining younger players. The team has gained confidence from India’s recent ODI success, which included a 2-1 series victory against New Zealand in October.
